Enhancing Brain Health, Dementia Science, Care and Policy in Africa

Bridging Gaps and Pioneering Solutions for a Dementia-free Africa.

The African Dementia Consortium (AfDC) is a pioneering research organization focused on promoting brain health and defeating dementia in Africa through groundbreaking research, collaboration, capacity building, and engagement with patients, public, policy-makers, care-givers and advocacy groups. AfDC is driven by the vision to promote brain health and defeat dementia in Africa and the mission to bridge gaps in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) translational research in Africa. She aims to promote brain health, advance understanding of the neurobiology and improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of dementia among African and all global populations. AfDC has a strong commitment to equity in care access and promotion of policies that enhance brain health and reduce the burden of dementia in Africa.

AfDC’s researches emphasize the development of infrastructures that explore Africa’s diverse genetic, cultural, economic, and environmental landscape which could unlock unique insights into the biological basis of brain health and dementia for global impact. Core research areas include epidemiological studies including a life course approach, multi-Omics, biomarker discovery, clinical trials, individual and population-based risk reduction strategies, and T1-T5 translational science to integrate findings into policies and practice. Also, by integrating AI (Artificial Intelligence), including machine learning and deep learning, AfDC promotes big data science and participation in global initiatives working with harmonized large-scale epidemiological and omics data to accelerate discoveries that advance personalized medicine for brain health and promotes brain capital and knowledge-driven economies in Africa and globally.

Additionally, AfDC prioritizes capacity building, offering training and networking opportunities, particularly for early-career researchers, to strengthen brain health and dementia research in Africa. AfDC collaborates with institutions worldwide, generating data and insights that contribute to dementia care improvement not only in Africa but across global populations. The consortium is committed to participant privacy, data security and equitable and inclusive involvement and deployment of diverse resources for driving innovation and creativity to accelerate solutions for brain disorders across the life course in Africa and globally.

Our Funders and Partners

READD-ADSP-AFRICA

Aims to enhance genetic diversity in AD research by engaging underrepresented African populations, with participation from research centers across multiple African countries. This project seeks to expand understanding of AD’s genetic causes to develop effective treatments.

ORIGINs Project

Focuses on the genetic origins of AD among African Americans and indigenous Africans, aiming to address the diversity gap in AD genetic research. This study, in partnership with institutions in the USA, Nigeria, and Ghana, aspires to uncover genetic insights that could benefit global dementia research.

ISAVRAD Project AFRICA

This project aims to provide new insights into how our minds and bodies have been affected by the pandemic, focusing on brain activity, genetic factors, and cognitive health.

AFRICA-FINGERS Project

The AFRICA-FINGERS program is a groundbreaking initiative within the World-Wide FINGERS network that aims to reduce dementia risk in Africa.
