The African Dementia Consortium (AfDC) is a pioneering organization dedicated to promoting brain health and eradicating dementia in Africa through research, collaboration, creativity and innovation. With a commitment to bridging knowledge gaps, AfDC aims to improve understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of Alzheimer’s and related dementias in African populations. The consortium focuses on building local research capacity, fostering international partnerships, and translating research findings into impactful policies. Through its initiatives, AfDC strives to create a dementia-free future with equitable access to care and preventive strategies for all.
We are a pioneering research organization dedicated to promoting brain health and eradicating dementia across Africa. Our mission is driven by the urgent need to bridge the vast translation gaps in Alzheimer’s and other dementias on the continent. As the population ages, addressing dementia has become not only a social and economic necessity but also a moral and ethical responsibility.
We believe in the power of genetic, biomarker, and pathological research in Africa’s diverse environments to unlock new insights into the biology of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Our work aims to advance global understanding of dementia, ultimately improving prevention, treatment, and care for individuals and communities worldwide. We are committed to ensuring equity in access to dementia diagnosis, treatment, and prevention strategies across Africa.
A dementia-free Africa where every individual has access to resources and avenues for the promotion of brain health and risk reduction strategies, early recognition and detection and optimal care for persons living with dementia
The broad aim of the African Dementia Consortium (AfDC) is to bring together African dementia researchers in a multidisciplinary framework and generate clinical, cognitive, socioeconomic, neuroimaging, genomic and biomarker data to improve the phenotypic characterization of dementia in Africans. The network will also identify novel biomarkers and interventions for prevention and treatment. The AfDC will further foster the translation of evidence to policy and practice and contribute to efforts to reduce the burden of dementia among Africans, African ancestry populations in Diaspora and ultimately contribute to the reduction of the global burden of dementia.
Aims to enhance genetic diversity in AD research by engaging underrepresented African populations, with participation from research centers across multiple African countries. This project seeks to expand understanding of AD’s genetic causes to develop effective treatments.
Focuses on the genetic origins of AD among African Americans and indigenous Africans, aiming to address the diversity gap in AD genetic research. This study, in partnership with institutions in the USA, Nigeria, and Ghana, aspires to uncover genetic insights that could benefit global dementia research.
This project aims to provide new insights into how our minds and bodies have been affected by the pandemic, focusing on brain activity, genetic factors, and cognitive health.
