Professor Rufus Akinyemi was interviewed by “Nigerian Tribune” — a widely read newspaper in Nigeria for World Alzheimer’s month.
Rufus Akinyemi is a professor of geriatric neurology and translational neuro-science and the lead for the African Dementia Consortium. In this interview with SADE OGUNTOLA, he speaks about the unique reasons more Nigerians may develop dementia, a brain degeneration problem due to increasing psychoactive drug use, as well as the increasing incidence of social isolation, hypertension, low education among other factors that are strongly associated with memory problems and dementia in Nigeria. As part of the celebration of Alzheimer’s Day, our team in Benin organized an information and awareness session on the Radio on September, 25.
This session was structured around the topic: “Perceptions and experiences of Alzheimer’s disease in Benin”
This activity was hosted by Professors Agbétou Madinatou of neurology and Yvette Onibon Doubogan, sociologist, head of the community engagement team of Benin, READD – ADSP Project under the African Dementia Consortium in Benin Republic.
Dementia was featured on the news @ntanetwork Ibadan on the 20th, September 2025 with educating clips from Professor Rufus Akinyemi, Consultant Neurologist at University College Hospital and an interview snippet by Dr Temitope Farounbi, Consultant Neurologist at the University College Hospital.

To mark the World Alzheimer’s day, Tanzania Ministry of Health and the Director of Clinical Services, Dr. Hamad Nyembea at Mirembe National Mental Health Hospital, Dodoma Tanzania commemorated the event with Community Advisory Board for Dementia Research, Print and Electronic Media staff and Health Care Workers in Attendance
BRAIN with AfDc celebrated a successful 4-day World Alzheimer’s Month community education event in Yaoundé, held in partnership with LAFTA. The program reached over 600 seniors directly and tens of thousands more through national TV and radio. BRAIN and the African Dementia Consortium (AfDC) expressed gratitude to partners, volunteers, funders, and community members. This was to further our Dementia awareness program to Jos, Plateau state to commemorate World Alzheimer’s Month!
Our Zaria Team was represented by the Professor of medicine, Reginald Obiako, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching hospital Shika, Zaria was interviewed by Alamanah Daily on “What dementia is?” and “Recommendations to the Government in order to tackle this disease”.
He was interviewed in 2 languages— English Language and the indigenous Hausa Language to reach a wide variety of persons.
