In order of priority, AfDC will focus on research areas including:
epidemiological studies (including a life course approach) to define trends in prevalence, incidence, and risk factors for dementia in Africa.
genetic studies to unmask novel variants that predispose to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) in African populations and increase African participation in global genomic studies including trans – ancestry meta-analyses.
detection of unique biomarkers for dementia.
conduct of dementia clinical trials involving African populations.
capacity building and networking among dementia researchers living or working in Africa particularly early career investigators.
facilitation of translational dementia research.
promotion of implementation science for translation of research evidence to practice and policy in Africa and
training and education of the next generation of research leaders.
The consortium is building effective synergies through collaborative research networks with researchers within Africa and with partners from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and other regions of the world.
